The Trust Fund of RUNVAN would like to organize two activities during the IV Day week 2009 in December.
A.Award to the volunteer/organization/group
B.Assist the old peoples ( old age home)

There will be three awards namely to: a voluntary organization, a female volunteer and a male volunteer. A cash prize, a certificate and a souvenir with a RUNVAN logo will be provide to the selected volunteer/organization. The final selection will be done by the RUNVAN/Trust Fund committee.

Selection Criteria for the volunteer:
a.Should be a volunteer, preferably with a voluntary orientation training
b.Should have involved and contributed to RUNVAN in any form.
c.Should have participated in RUNVAN's activities throughout the year

Bonn, Germany: In 1993, a group of 30 Nepalese ex-UN Volunteers formed the Returned United Nations Volunteers Association of Nepal (RUNVAN) as a way to continue volunteering at home.

Today, the association has 200 members and is one of Nepal’s biggest advocates and promoters of volunteerism.

In association of professionals who have served as United Nations Volunteers in many countries and excelled in their respective areas of competence. After completing their assignments, the returned volunteers realized the need of a platform, where they could share their experience and organize themselves to initiate joint endeavors in the development process

Child Protectio Home

Child Protection Home (BAL GRIHA Sangh):- It is located at Siffal. It is the place were many children whose parents are in prison live. Child Protection Home is an organization who has been helping the children in various field of work. There are altogether 61 people living there out of which 9 are staff members. There are 34 boys & 27 girls. The children are provided individual beds. The rooms are kept neat & clean. The rooms are beautifully decorated & the children are well disciplined.

Shyambhu Plantation

The students went to shyambhu area on 11th October for plantation. The space was provided by shyambhu conservation and promotion committee. They planted 60 plants in total. They planted the local species of plant since shyambhu is one of the world cultural heritage and hence we need to maintain our identity. The plants include sallo, kaiyo, kapoor, dhupi, chilaune and jakaranda. The plant was provided by the department of forestry. Plantation campaign was launched in an effort to fight against the global challenge of climate change. Students got an opportunity to know the varied species of local plants and collected the experience of plantation. They took this campaign as an opportunity to express their solidarity against climate change. Since the students were working against climate change, this campaign help them to achieve their objective.
After the plantation was over, there was a review programme. Every students participated in the review programme. They shared their experience of one week social work which was exciting, new, interesting and fruitful in their own word despite some pitfalls in time management and weather conditions.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

CLEANING BHADRAKALI AREA
ORIENTATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE.

The students of group 8 involved in cleaning program of bhadrakali temple on oct-8. Students cleaned the surroundings of bhadrakali temple despite heavy rainfall. This shows their dedication towards work. They collected all the solid waste scattered around bhadrakali temple and tried their best to make the temple area free of solid waste. Moreover, pushpa gurju bajracharya (priest of the temple, 76 yrs old) orient them about the origin of bhadrakali temple. Students were very interested in gaining the historical information of bhadrakali temple.
On the same day, students attended the orientation class on climate change. The orientation programme was organized at tri-chandra campus, ghantaghar. Mukesh Dangi, one of the environment activists from clean energy Nepal (CEN) gave the presentation on different aspects of climate change. Students found the presentation very effective, fruitful and relevant to their topic. The presentator highlights the gravity of the problem of climate change and its probable consequences. Students were happy in getting opportunity to learn different aspect of climate change.

Paper bag for Environment

As always the program started at 12:00 pm in the first hour of afternoon. Fortunately each and every participant including the facilitator saunak reached the specified location in time, therefore no fine was collected. The group of volunteers started manufacturing paper bags as mentioned in the action plan. The manufactured paper bags were decorated with colorful papers, different slogans and shine pens. It took around 2 hours for the volunteers to prepare around 80-90 paper bags. Then the group was taken to Namaste supermarket to run the awareness program. The awareness was carried out with the teem "Use paper bags instead of plastic bags". Some of the volunteers were demotivated in the beginning because of some negative response from the public but the volunteers were awarded with various positive responses as well which made them stronger. The group even met with people like R.k who is now planning to have a meeting with the volunteers about further strategies. The group of volunteers then went to the nearby Ashok stupa where experience sharing and debriefing day activities session was carried out. Each and every volunteer were awarded with a specific tag like Mr. Personality, Ms. powerful girls etc In this way the session ended.

Today, the cleaning program started a bit late as a function took place at the temple in the morning.So. Mr.Alok Tuladhar a volunteer of the Jana Bahal society shared the information about the 'Seto Machchindranath' as well as it's impact on society and the religious aspects of the temple.The volunteers of this group cleaned up the butter lamp posts surrounding the temple as well as the volunteers of our group namely Ayush,Bishwas,Pranish and Samyek also participated. The accessories such as brush and spatula were provided by the Jana Bahal society, the volunteers provided themselves with gloves and masks. The volunteers cleaned the oily surface which covered the butter lamp posts as well as the pigeons waste. The volunteers were bit unwilling at first but did finish the work enthusiastically in the end. This work does deserve a round of applause.

Feedback from the participants:

Tenzing Kunchok: The program was fun and enjoyable but due to lack of tools, we could not do our work effectively.

Ganga Tiwari: We did get to go to different places gaining experience from different places. The major drawback of our group is that the co-ordination was lacking.

Tenzing Tushi: The group members were good to work with. The thing that I did not like is waking up early morning for this work.

Juna Khatri: The members of the group are very supportive and enthusiastic to the work though at times the members were not punctual.

Today our volunteers went to canvas int. school to give some information to the students of that school.They provided knowledge about traffic rules and regulations to them.they provided knowledge about the effects of being careless about the traffic rules and regulations. Today, the volunteers of 'Children Home' co-ordinated with an orphanage 'Ama Ghar'.
The volunteers at first interacted with the staff and the children from the place. As the volunteers told us that the staff of 'Ama Ghar' were very hostile and friendly.
The volunteers along with the children at 'Ama Ghar' cleaned the volleyball court as well as did the lining of the court. After lining and cleaning the volleyball court, the volunteers cleaned and maintined the kitchen garden in the premises of the 'Ama Ghar'. All the volunteers of this group brought smile in the faces of the children they are bound to be appreciated.

Today, the regular jobs were done in kuleshowor. Things including cooking for the old ladies and cleaning up the house. Painting doors and railing of house. The special thing today was that the social work team there lead by Mr. Manjil bought three beds for the old ladies there. Over Rs. 5000 was collected , which included generous donations from Mr. Santosh Bohara, Mrs. Ramila Shrestha, The documentation team and the social work team. The beds were bought all the way from Taudaha. The sum amount was also used to buy the blankets and pillows for the old ladies. Well this remarkable achievement will be forever cherished. Well done to all of you guys, you deserve it!!

A presentation was held in Teku, regarding the procedure to make and use compost manure. Two groups were present in the presentation. Both of the groups learned to use the tools to make the manure. A drum of 100 kg capacity was used to make the manure. It was a quite effective way of reducing pollution and increasing the production of crops.

At 1:00 pm, the two groups gathered at the Slum area beside Tripureshor bridge. The groups were further separately divided into three groups. All the groups gathered the people there and informed them about the use of compost manure and its process. The people had a positive attitude towards the proposed plan. Most of them agreed to use it upon our help as well. The team managed to grab a lot of attention, and were quite satisfied with their efforts. The goal was achieved quite smoothly.

Today the volunteers from the traffic management group helped the traffic management at Putali Sadak. They were divided into groups of two and were appointed specific spots all over the place. When asked about the responsibility of managing the traffic, they were quite satisfied with their work. The traffic police officers also reacted rather appreciatively. Well, even though all the people did not follow the instructions properly, our team managed to grab the attention of a lot of people. The team could not force the people to follow the rules, but gave it their best shot. A very good job done indeed. After all working in the burning heat is not an easy job. Hats off to our traffic management team!!

Fundraising for 'Old Age Home'

Today the volunteers cleaned up the park in the temple premises as well as covered a little part of the surrounding jungle. The volunteers also cleaned up the butter lamps surrounding the Bajra Barahi temple.

Today, the children at 'Ama Ghar' were off to their community school. So, the volunteers of ACE were making visual aid for the children for their future reference. As well as they made a chart 'Welcome To Ama Ghar' and renovated the sign board which is on the road.

The volunteers of the documentation group were a great help. Ayush,Bishwas,Pranil and Samyek did some field work. They filled the volleyball court with soil with the facilitator Mr.Umesh Khatri.The tools like hoe and shovel were provided by the staff of 'Ama Ghar'

The funds were raised to donate beds to 'Old Age Home' situated at Kuleshwor.
The total funds raised from this group was Rs 600 where the group members donated Rs 50 each.

Children Protection Home

As briefings of today’s planned events were made the volunteers were divided into 3 groups. One of the groups stayed at the children protection home where the other two groups went out to raise funds. The volunteers will be cleaning the room, organizing the beds and the bed sheets in the children room.

Yesterday the volunteers painted 3 different rooms of the children and cleaned the children protection home surroundings. Which was made possible thanks to Mr. Nitin Jalan(Krishna Hardware) for providing the paint and Mr. Suman Shrestha(Kathmandu Hardware) for the cement and tarpin oil through the fund raising activities by the volunteers.

Today 19 students of group 7 (environment; clean energy; pollution), lead by Mr.Saunak Bhatta, went to adinath temple, chobar. This site was chosen by mr.bhatta with the sole propose of awaring the local people to maintain the heritage site of such importance. Historically this temple is so old that the local residents, even the elderly, don’t have an idea as to when the temple was built. Culturally, it plays and important part of the local heritage. People come to this temple hoping that their dearly departed will rest in peace and in order to do so, they have a tradition of sticking utensils on the walls of the inner temple area. They group assigned to clean the temple premises was enthusiastic and had managed most of the cleaning resources by them self. The resources consist of kerosene, toothbrush, bottle caps, knifes and rags. They cleaned the butter-lamp stands, the temple premises and the prayer wheels along the temple. After cleaning program was finished the group had program of playing games and interaction with the local residents.

Children’s protection home, sifal

Children’s protection home was first established in 2028 BS. This home is financially supported by Nepal children organization. 95% of the children in this home have their parents serving their time in jail. There are about 61 children right now in this home. These children’s age is between 3 to 18 years. All of these children go to BalBavashani School which is right next to the children protection home.
This home has been providing education, shelter, food and clothing to the children. Time to time the children’s health is checked by Nepal Children organization. The food and water quality is regularly maintained by the home. These children are looked after by 8 staff members.
Volunteers have cleaned the premises. They maintained the garden and have started to paint the rooms of the children. The volunteers have been divided into two groups. One group is helping to raise funds for this home and the other is painting rooms and helping to keep the place in a better shape

Introduction of ECCA (Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness) was done by Mr.Shushil. He explained the activities of the day were planting a tree. This campaign was started in 2006. The volunteers were divided in several other groups. These each group contributed rs.300 and got a sapling to plant. The volunteers seemed energetic and egger to do the work.
Then we walked few minutes from ECCA to UN Park. Volunteers were given shovels and hoes. Different groups were given different sections in the UN Park to do their work. They first removed the unwanted grass and plants to make space for the sapling they were going to plant. Yearly about 300 plants are planted by ECCA. They seem to enjoy the work.

Cleaning Swyambhu

The cleaning programme was being held in Swyambuat 10:45am. This programme was held to clean the sourroundings of swyambhu. All the participants were energetic in cleaning the sourroundings of the national heritage. they all were happy in that.

Taking videos and photos
Cleaning the sorrundings of the temple.
Ladder sanitation.

Got opportunity to dirt their hands.
Got opportunity to clean the national heritage.

Some of he monkey troubled them.

Due to the rain their programme was stoped for some time but they started again.The pragramme was ended have lots of fun.

Traffic Rules And Regulations

The students of ace institute of management (bba and bba-bi) took part in helping programme for traffic police. The programme was started at 8am to 11 am. Our friends were also taking part on controlling the traffic on the road different events were held there. Some are as below:

Teaching rules and regulations to local people.
Controlling traffic.
Checking licience and bill books twice a day.
Stoping people while crossing the road illigaly.

Briddha ashram is a great support for the old and helpless people. This was estalished by dil shova shrestha. She owns and lives there helping and supporting old people since 10 years. She provides food, clothes and shelter to old people from her personal money.

SOME OF THE INFORMATION ABOUT OLD PEOPLE THERE

In that briddha ashram people of age 65 to 80 lives there.
Some women were there due to poverty , some were wounded, some have self reasons and many of them were son humiliated.
Many old people were living there for 5 to 6 years and some were 2 to 3 years.
Medical treatment were also provided there.
Old women were offered everything in schedule.

Some of our friends visited there. they take different information about them and their living styles. They helped them in their works due to which they were very happy. They told our friends that if their sons and daughters were as helpful as our friends. Our friends find that the old people were happy and satisfied what they get in their usual life.

kathmandu, Nepal.....the amaghar is home for the children who are helpless.This is located in godawari.this was established by shrawan nepali to provide support to the helpless children.he was suported by his godmother, ama tika basnet.

This amaghar have 38 children at present. there are 7 workers who are helping him.there are children of age group6 to 18 years old. there are 75% of girls among all.

This organization have provided different facilities to the childrens. They are as below :

Safe and loving nepali home atmoshphere.
Different cultural activities are done.
Children support and resources they need.
Quality education.
Healthy surroundings.
Well equipped library.
More oppotunities.

All the children are very happy, they are satisfied what they have got.

By looking the importance of aama ghar the founder is building another new amaghar which will be completed in 2010A.D. That new ammaghar will be capable for 75 children which will be designed with sustainability in mind using solar energy , bio fuels and effective waste management.

The kupondole bridge which was cleaned by the voluntary students . As Mr.Jeet Bahadur Lama a slum resident provided the utlities to the voluntary students . The main area of focus is the wild grass growing in the area and cleaning them.
Municipality is providing a truck for the collection of the waste materials.
